Ummm.. What have I been up too?

Ummm.. What have I been up too? Well let me just tell you...

I have been crazy busy for the past month. Actually I have been busy since school has started! Our first project of the semester was our matching garment. I was very pleased with the pants that I created. I wanted to challenge myself with creating wide leg pleated pants.
February 17th and 18th I had an event for my African Student Organization. I had the opportunity to make and sell jewelry and clothes for the people who were attending. I was happy that some of the attendees bought liked my merchandise!
I am working hard on my competition garment for design class. My inspiration was surrealism and the artist Remidious Varo. He had an image of a peacock that i was really intrigued by. I also wanted to grasp the fantasy and sexuality of surrealism.

Lastly, I have just finished my backpack that I was creating for accessories class. I really enjoyed creating this item. On the base of the bag I did a coiling technique that I learned in fibers class semesters back.

Storyboards

Take me back to Australia/New Zealand!!! The theme for my first storyboard is the Aborigines. The ancient aboriginal people had many customs of dance, body scarification and village life. I wanted to look at the atmosphere and weather when I chose my silhouettes. Breezy, cool and comfortable dresses and separates were the garments that I thought would best represent the feel of the down under.

Norway anybody? I love the warm and cozy feeling of sweaters in the cold! For my second storyboard I wanted to go with a Nordic feel. With this style and trend, the garments mostly consist of cool colors. You can match Nordic prints with many pieces and you can also mix and match other pieces with Nordic printed sweaters, capes, skirts, dresses and pants.

What do y'all think?! Post your comments and opinions!!

A little sparkle here a little sparkle there...

A new movie to release on August 17,2012 is the remake of the original movie "Sparkle". Some cast members include Tika Sumpter, Carmen Ejogo, as the sisters, american idol winner Jordin Sparks playing the lead role of Sparkle and the diva herself Whitney Houston playing the mother.

The movie is based in the 1950's and portray the classic silhouettes of that time period. In the 2006 movie "Dreamgirls" played by academy award winner Jennifer Hudson, Anika Noni Rose, and Beyonce Knowles, prom dresses and pageant wear where inspired by the 1960-1975 based film. This time around, I believe that Hollywood will be inspired by the 1950's then trickle down to prom dresses and evening wear.

Denton and its take on style

This weekend I acted like the infamous Bill Cunningham of the New York Times. I was concentrated on how different people treated prints. Some dressed it up and some down. A couple of people had printed sweaters that are in style for the fall/winter season. Other people I have seen played around with prints with layering on other pieces. One girl dressed up her printed skirt with a blazer and a wedge. By dressing down her printed dress, another girl wore a jacket and combat boots. Prints will always be in season but it all depends on how you make it your own style that would make it unique.

WHAT INSPIRES ME...

WHAT INSPIRES ME....

There are many things that inspire me. My culture and background is Nigerian and I love to get inspiration from the fabrics to the colorful atmosphere. When people go back to there family heritage and culture and gain understanding of it, inspiration would be knocking at their door. My cultures garments are full of different prints and patterns. I like to challenge myself with mixing different prints and colors together. To me, whenever someone can take prints like strips and tribal and put them together, it shows me that they are confident, bold and daring.
Unique skin tones and mixtures of various ethnic groups inspire me. As crazy as it may sound but just by looking at a beautiful model with a bronze, mocha or even snow skin tone, I would try to design and imagine different colors and styles that would best represent her beautiful color.
The way a woman expresses herself with her hair inspires me.When I am not doing my designing, doing school work or sewing, I love to do hair. Hair now a days can be considered an accessory. Part time I sew in extensions for people, and YouTube different new ways to style hair. Extensions or weave for black women is an easy way to do what ever you want with your hair without damaging your own natural hair. Weave is very versatile. It comes in synthetic or 100% human hair and colors from bubble gum pink to barbie blonde. You can design a garment around different hairstyles and hair colors.
Lastly I am also in love with lavish weddings and bridal gowns with crazy volume. Beautiful marriages bring a smile to my face. Designing for brides are a challenge because you want to fit their personality. You can catch me watching every bridal show there is!
